About SMC
The Singapore Medical Council (SMC), a statutory board under the Ministry of Health Singapore, regulates the medical profession. Operating under the Medical Registration Act 1997, its functions are to maintain the register of medical practitioners, regulate the professional conduct and ethics of registered medical practitioners and administer the compulsory continuing medical education. SMC is governed by a Council comprising 27 registered medical practitioners and is supported in its work by a Secretariat. For more information about SMC, please click here.

Local-Trained Doctors and International Medical Graduates

Local Medical Graduates who have obtained an MBBS or equivalent basic degree awarded by any of the medical schools specified in the First Schedule of the Medical Registration Act 1997 may apply for Provisional Registration and thereafter seek Full Registration upon obtaining the Certificate of Experience, taking the Physician’s Pledge, and fulfilling prevailing registration criteria.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) with a degree from a medical school specified in the Second Schedule of the MRA and completed Postgraduate Year 1 (PGY1) may apply for Conditional Registration. IMGs who do not hold qualifications recognised by the SMC will not be eligible to apply for medical registration to practise in Singapore.

Procedure for Medical Registration and Processing Time

Applications for medical registration must be submitted online. The average processing time for applications is 4 weeks or longer if there is a need for verifications of qualifications and checking for good standing with overseas institutions or regulatory bodies.
